So what advantage am I getting here?

I am just not seeing enough internal content, that would cause me to wanna upgrade to this platform. Its very very basic, and you cant add any existing modules that are very wanted modules, for many? It just doesn't make any since to upgrade, to just go backwards, in all that is available for Dolphin. I think this platform could and would bore people to the point of no interest and leave. Is there and will there be modules that will excite users, like we have on Dolphin, and how quickly will the be available?

And it seems like everything you wanna add, has a yearly fee now? It seems this could be a very expensive platform to use or administer.

I mean in comparison....

      • James Zandreiatti In my opinion, you are getting far more than you think you may looking at it from the outside. Being I have been around since 2011, I can tell you that Dolphin was great, it had awesome everything out the box, tons of options for privacy and usability, just install, configure and go. But...then along came UNA. A platform that's simple, smart, sweet, and a major tool to use for building more than just a social network.  Yes, there are modules to be bought. There is a lot of modules that come free as well. UNA is also beautifully written. There are several members of the UNA team. They all have families and bills just like you and I do. That is the reason that not everything is free. They need finances to survive both at home and in the coding and support world. UNA would cease to exist if they gave all of us as well as the rest of those everything for free. I am sure you can understand this.

I will say this though, Andrew Boon is working hard to devise a plan to give those who wish to test out UNA without upfront costs a chance. It's a great plan and will help those such as yourself to use it and see if it's what you need and can use to successfully build your project. And you can migrate your Dolphin site over to UNA. I am posting the link to the discussion regarding the aforementioned plan I spoke about for your review. I hope this helps answer your questions and look forward to having you on the UNA side.

        See discussion here https://una.io/page/view-discussion?id=4255

        • Brother, I totally get the cost thing. Im a bit bothered with the whole yearly payment thing though. Why isn't like dolphin where you buy and its yours, and often comes with future updates?

See trying to get someone to join a site that has no features, like the older sites do or at least say similar to facebook, is next to impossible. Many people have joined my site because of the feature content. It would be nice if there was a way to bring modules in to this new platform.

          • Comment by unknown is hidden.
            • So your saying that whats in the list can be made at request for UNA? I just pay the $50 a year?

Where would I search for mods such as what I have in the list?

              • In my own opinion based off my own experiences using Dolphin sites for probably around 12 years before moving over to UNA here is what I found:

Having "too much" can be the very reason you site doesn't succeed. I did the same exact thing as you mentioned above. Spending $1,000's in modules and custom modules to make a site where you could "Do it all". EVERY one of those sites failed. What I mean by fail is, sure you may get a bunch of members to join, for them to say it's a cool website, but....logging in less and less until they do not return. You will even have those who join and never sign back in again. When I asked some of the users what they thought about my Mega-Site that I was so proud of, they responded with "There is just so much stuff" and "It's too difficult and hard to navigate".

So I had to tell myself the actual reality.. I would NEVER be able to build a "replacement" site for those Giant, very well established, millions of active users, and very well funded social networks. So the conclusion, don't try to be like them. Be different.

Today, people want to be able to go to a site/app and do what they want and do it fast! For example:

Twitter - People login to a page where the can read/post/comment/like/retweet from a single page. BAM Done. Facebook - Most people do the same thing there as well and from a single page. The difference with Facebook is that you do have activity in Groups and Pages.
Instagram - Same thing.Read/post/like/comment.. .BAM Done..

So when you overload your site with so many features, when someone joins for the first time, they are going to see all this stuff and be like.. waoh.. where am I suppose to start??

So lets talk about your list of apps/modules that you have listed. Several of those were build off the "Groups" module and customized with some additional features. But does UNA have what you need? Let's see:

                Timeline - Check
                Privacy Settings - Check
Email - Check - Called "Conversations" here at UNA
Messenger - Check - can be used for PMs or group chats. I believe Alexey is working on additional chat features like Live Streaming.
                Privacy Settings - Check
Blogs - Check - That is known as the "Posts" app here at UNA
Forums - Check - Called "Discussions" here at UNA
                Mobile Apps - Check
                Ads - Check
                Social Media Logins - Check
                Polls - Check
Points System - Check (this is a 3rd party app and purchasable)
                Media Albums - Check
Profile Tags - Here are UNA I believe "@mentions" may be more feasible like James Zandreiatti
For all of you "Specific" pages - You can use "Spaces" app to create what is better known as "Pages". You can have "Parent" pages with sub-pages under that. For example, you have Schools and Bands mentioned above, You can create these 2 Spaces and if you want, create additional Spaces under those.
What I am getting at is that you can do most all of that with UNA. And now, I save the very best for last...

You can convert your pro Dolphin licenses to a UNA Pro plan at no charge by emailing support@una.io with your UNA Username, Bonnex Username, and the license you want to convert. This will give you UNA platform, SysAps, Core Apps, and Pro Apps. You can see them here: https://una.io/page/features

So if you already have hosting and a Dolphin license, you are not spending anything more than what you already are... for hosting.
I would like to offer some friendly advise though. Make your site different, unique. This will help target audiences (new members) and keep interest in your site for people to continue returning.

                • Truer words were never spoken than these, just above.

People's attention span has never been shorter. We must not blow their minds with too many cute features, extra taps or clicks to make, and on-the-fly decisions to figure out. We imagine that we provide the only site in their world and that they must learn and adapt. But this is a huge miscalculation.

Thank you, thank you Chris, for the timely reminder:

                  • So I guess my new question here is? If i have these modules already and bought and paid for, does that mean I have access to them here as they've been paid for already? Is that the purpose of the download button on each module here? Or do I have to start all over and purchase these $50 for the year links.

See on the old modules, it was you bought them and got the free updates as they updated them. No more money needed...

I've already duped $1000's in my current site and modules. Do I lose all that investment, and what guarantees that doesn't happen here?

                    • Not sure I completely understand the question "If i have these modules already and bought and paid for, does that mean I have access to them here as they've been paid for already?" - Are you referring to UNA modules you or modules you purchased at BoonEx for your Dolphin site?

If you converted a pro Dolphin license to UNA Pro, then that is all that's needed. You get the Sys,Core, and Pro apps I mentioned above and their updates.. No $50 per year.

I "think" even if you convert a pro Dolphin License to UNA, you can still have both sites running. Do you lose that investment? Well, that depends on if you decide to go with UNA or stay with Dolphin. Dolphin will no longer be supported at all in the next couple years and pretty sure it will no longer get updated either. Trust me I know the feeling. If I had to guess, I would say I had close to $4,000-$6,000 and maybe a little more. So yeah, kinda hard to give it up but I did.

And nothing is ever guaranteed... I am not guaranteed to wake up in the morning. I just hope and pray I do 😁

                      • Yes I am referring to all the modules purchased through the years, to populate my current site.

So as far as the displayed cost on a particular module where it says "$50 for a year", is waved with my Pro Dolphin converted License?

Ahhh so you get where I'm coming from as far as investment. Its a tough one to swallow. I'm sure I very close to that number you've spent as well. So I am just cautious. It would be pointless to hang on to Dolphin v.  7.3.5, upgrade to 7.2.4, for it to just lose momentum in a couple years, if they are discontinuing it in the not to far future.

                        • James Zandreiatti like Chris mentioned earlier, if you have a Dolphin Pro license then email UNA support and they will convert your license to UNA pro plan and you will notice the aformentioned modules no longer have a price by them. You will download them in Studio and install them by clicking on the Downloaded link in the Apps Market in Studio.

                          • So as far as the displayed cost on a particular module where it says "$50 for a year", is waved with my Pro Dolphin converted License?

That is correct. If you decided to transfer your pro Dolphin License to UNA Pro, then the apps I mentioned come with that plan. There is no yearly fees. If you decided to purchase an app that is NOT part of the Sys, Core, or Pro apps, then that is a different story.

And yes, I completely understand as far as investments. However, that is the risk with any investment correct? I would suggest rethinking your options and determine whether you want to move forward with UNA or not. Once I saw the new focus was now UNA and Dolphin was going away but I still wanted a "website", It didn't take long for me to decided. And yes, very tough to accept my losses. Thankfully, UNA has proven to be everything I really "needed" for a website.

                            • I seriously appreciate everyone of your inputs and opinion in this question. I thank each of you individually. I have thought long, hard and independently considering your thoughts, and I think I am ready to move forward in to the UNA family. I have looked at many modules, that not only are either new or standard , but also did find that many modules that were purchased separately on Market Place, have actually been combined in many aspects to be one Module in UNA. I think this new venture will be one that will be a better investment for sure. I love how fluid it runs right off the bat. The usability of it overall is breathtaking, in many aspects.

So thank you to each of you for your information and direction.

                              JZ

                              • I would Like to see some features that I had with Modzzz modules for sure, such as memorials, bands, celebrities, and of course a few by Daniel Boon, such as real estate and auto sales mods. I bought many mods through Modzz, ABQ Soft (AntonLV), and Expertzkris , etc. I'd love to see a games module again as well, drinks, flowers, gifts as well.

                                • Well, ABQ is developing for UNA and so is Expertzkris for sure so I am sure you will be happy you're moving over to UNA. Welcome aboard bud

                                  • That's great. Yes I've worked closely with Andrew, ABQ, Modzzz and Expertzkris through the years. So it should be a great venture, as well as meeting new people such as yourself. 😆

And thank you for the welcome aboard my friend. I'm sure we will find plenty to talk about in the future.

                                    • Ok so far people are really enjoying the new site, as am I. Things are a little cumbersome on admin side as I get used to what does what and how it works. But overall, much easier to manage and maintain. Good Job guys.

                                      • Glad it's working out so far. Hang in there. Little bit of a learning experience but well worth  its weight in gold.
