First Question: Is it safe to upgrade from 12.1.0 to UNA-13-b3, or is there something more I should look at. I don't want to upgrade if its not going to be seamless from the version I currently have.
Second Question: Why does the upgrade not show up on my dashboard? I've tried turning on Auto-Update and force update to know avail. Am I missing a step or something??

It's better for you to wait until the next stable release, if you don't want to contribute to the bug hunting.
As to your problem with hidden upgrades, you either did not choose the beta channel for upgrades in developer module or you didn't configure your cronjob correctly.
YA I think Ill wait then, lol. Currently site is stable and working well. I haven't subscribed beta channel. So that makes sense. Anxious is all. Thanks for the info though it helps and explains a bit.
B4 is pretty stable to me. Just some template issues. Unfortunately I think that all the bugs found in B4 will be piled up in B5 and that's gonna take another couple months. As long as they keep piling the bugs up there probably won't ever be another stable position.
What needs to happen in order to allow updates to happen securely? is incremental update that are secure and stable. Not wait till they "BELIEVE" all the kinks are worked out on one large release. Its much easier to deal with issues and script errors on small incremental levels. Than advance to further updates, as well being in small increments.
If you look around you will see this is the approach that many outside Scripting companies do, to include places like Microsoft, Linux and others. this is the purpose of a connected update system. They simply make the repair/update and the fix is done through updates. No long waits... I have a few scripting companies I work with that also do it this way. There is never a issue upon release. If there is??? they fix it quickly, then release the update.
updates first, then cosmetic and eye candy after. then introduce whatever thereafter. This was a big issue in Dolphin, which drove people away or caused a lot of headaches. There was never no concentration on certain areas. A lot of bouncing around, never really fixing underlying problems within the script.
Dolphin is still a great script and they could have gone so much further with it. they chose not to and opened a new can of warms which seems to have the same impact as Dolphin received.
Here is my opinion/Observation, since using UNA:
What saddens me is these are just a few of the same issues Dolphin had...
UNA could have a shot at being the best Script out there, if they work on order and organization, as well as technical aspects of the Script to include use of it. I almost feel lost when using some aspects of UNA due to there is no structure to the support and know-how.
My thoughts on Corrective actions to UNA:
UNA Scripting:
(Should have a dedicated crew working the script continuously)
Templates:
(Should have there own dev crew working continuously)
New additions, content and major changes to modules:
(This should have its own Dev crew working continuously)
I miss Dolphin. My site had over 35,000 members from all over the world. It had no support for mobile and becoming an app and I think that was the big issue but overall it had a robust marketplace. In some ways its still powerful enough to be competitive to other social networks as long as there's someone who can convert the sites into apps. UNA was meant to be geared for apps and mobile but the balance between Desktop and Mobile can get in the way because it takes away the beautification of Mobile viewing. Dolphin is great for Desktop type sites and UNA is better for Mobile sites. You are correct with how I believe UNA can become better. Staying away from enhancements until original bugs are fixed is good. Smaller faster hot fixes will help everyone to transition between updates without losing too much custom work. Mod developers will have an easier time updating also. A sandbox that is a testing site that includes all the Mods in the Marketplace will help Mod developers also. It's just really hard because alot of Mods interfere with updates and UNA developers won't know this. As the marketplace grows its going to become more harder for Mod developers to create content if it interferes with other custom mods especially if they don't have access to other custom mods.
