Comment to '"Follow" doesn't appear on Organization's & Event home pages and Organization's & Event profile pages'
  • I have just updated to 11.0.4 and noticed that the follow button totally disappeared for people who have not joined an Organization. This is most probably due to the logic behind the "follow" : you must first "join" an organization to follow / unfollow an organization...
    Is this correct ?

    yes

Personally this logic is a problem for me because I need a logic where anyone can "follow" in order to receive notifications, without "joining". A sort of "fan page"... Maybe I should have used something else than the "organization "module to build such fan page ??

Yes, actually Spaces are created especially for such behaviour, you can follow Space without joining the Space.

    • Why would a org owner want people to join his business and manage all of that all the time, instead of having people simply follow him?..

Well, actually Orgs was created for a bit different purpose, where members of the Org are employees of the Org and they receive information inside the Org, also some people in the Org(Administrators) can switch profile to Org to perform some action as and Org. So it's like common profile which can be used by some people. In the future we'll try to find some way to make follow open to public optionally - https://github.com/unaio/una/issues/3107

People use the Org Module for different purposes. Like I am using it for building a social page for a town. So the Join is good as it's naturally intended for people who have deeper relationship with an entity, enabling them to participate in a whole lot of things as a community may require. For example, if you setup an opinion poll for a specific Community, it should ordinarily be restricted to members only.

However, the Follow icon is important for other categories of people with limited status to freely receive information from same community. It's not logical for this to get enabled after one has already joined as a member.

Meanwhile I am wondering what the Friend and Unfriend is supposed to do on an Org Module where you already have Join. I think this is a duplicate of "JOIN" for membership.

        Follow is very important

        • Hello Aleks T,

          Thanks for clarifying the logic.
I am not sure Spaces module will fit, mainly because it is not an "ID" -> you cannot blog nor create events in the name of a "space" or a "group" -  with Orgs you can.

The Organization module is very close to my needs. Within my "niche", I  want interest groups  to create their "organization's mini website" on the platform instead of spending time creating an independent website and fight SEO in order to be visible... by the community. I see the org module as a "mini website", a possibility to blog, create events, gather members and followers,... like you would do on a "traditional" website with more reactivity from a qualified audience.

I cannot wait for a future release, thus, the solution I am considering is :
          - use the "join" function, with a different wording : "subscribe"
          - I will simply "force" the field "confirm subscription" to "no" and not display it in the organization's creation and edit forms.
          - no use of the follow button

Then I think that people who click on "subscribe" (="join") will get notifications for any new post, event, etc...

          My questions :
          - Do you think those settings will fit my needs ?
          - What is the difference between "join" and "follow" regarding notifications ?
This is a temporary solution, and I agree with the other comments that the "Follow" question is very important for a social network, and that something is missing between the "spaces" and the "orgs" as it is today. It is important that some people have access as "admins" (in order to create blogs, events, ... in the name of the organization), but it is also important that some people can just "follow" what is happening (reading interesting blogs, be informed about events, join events opened to everyone,...) without "joining".
          Thank you for your help.
