Comment to 'Una servers are with who?'
  • AWS may be used for all sorts of things - storage, webservers, DB servers, backups, messaging, transcoding, CDN, etc. They mayor may not be using Amazon for essential services, but I am sure that with some effort they can reconfigure their setup to not use Amazon if necessary.

Regardless of how it pans out, I believe that putting all eggs in one basket is not a good idea anyway. If GAB or Parler or some other site becomes prominent enough they will also become an easy target to take down. Social graph must rely on multiple networks and trestles peer-to-peer federation.

    • It is a lot easier to take down a site of 1,000,000 than 1,000 sites of 1000.

      • That's exactly right. Also a lot more likely to abuse the power. Same reason why supermarkets are bad if they force small businesses out. We all end up eating same strawberries, even if they are toxic. And not because they're the best strawberries, but because those are the ones that make most profit for the supermarket.

        • I think the issue Mantze is having is he wasn't just hosted on AWS, rather Parler was built on AWS proprietary software, so when they shut him down they kept the script, all he could get was his DB at best out of them.  Which is why it wasn't a simple move the site.

At this stage I'd be surprised if Boonex wasn't reaching to Mantze to help offer him an overall solution to his problem.
