Clarifying Notifications

I was looking for some clarification on the types of Notifications available and wanted to make sure I understood them properly.

When it comes to notification, in the 'Persons' section. I assume Person is a friend/follower. Is that correct?

 Persons (add comment)

 Persons (add vote)

 Persons (add)

 Persons (post to timeline)

 Persons (reply to own comment)

For Profiles, see questions to the side:

Profiles Friends (add connection) - When a person you are friends with or follow adds a Friend?

Profiles Mentions (add) - When a friend or follower mentions you by using the @ symbol?

Profiles Subscriptions (add connection) - When a friend/follower starts following another member?

    • Since there has been no response here yet, let me explain my issue. As my site continues to grow, members have pointed out the amount of site notifications they receive are a bit extreme. They are really only concerned with activities that involve them and not EVERYTHING going on at the site with other members.

How can I setup the site notifications so that members are notified about what involves them? See the examples below:

Member wants to be notified via site when:

      - Someone sends them a friend request

      - Someone starts following them

      - Someone likes, comments, or reposts one of their OWN posts on the timeline.

      - Someone replies directly to them on a comment made by them (whether it's their post or not)

      - When someone they are friends with or follows make a post on the timeline

      - Someone mentions them using the @ symbol

What do I need to check in the onsite notifications for this to happen?

      • So I have been messing around to see if I can get the notifications set to match what the members want but that seems to be impossible or I am not doing something right.

For example, if you have Profiles Subscriptions (add connection) UNCHECKED - The member will not receive a notification that someone has 'followed' them. If you CHECK it, they will but, they also receive ALL of the notifications of other friends/followers when THEY follow other people.

So imagine this. You are friends or following 100 members. If all 100 of them happen to become friends with just 1 person, You are going to receive a massive 200 site notifications. 1 for 'become friends' and the other for the 'follow' since when you become friends, you automatically follow.

        Not good.

        • Hi Chris, if I understand the notifications will be completely reviewed, and members will have the opportunity to fine-tune it all.
So I think that since there are only a few days to wait for the rc10, the best thing to do for the moment is to warn your members that there will soon be a solution?
          What do you think .?

          • Well if it is going to be a few days that this will be addressed, I have no problem telling members that I am 'working on it' for now. I think having users being able to manage their own alerts is DEFINITELY the way to go. Not everyone will be the same.

            • Yes a good thing. That said, I had seen an option that automatically enabled follow-up if friendship. I think you should disable it, the problem is that I can not find it anymore ... :-) Where is she hiding?

              • Help LeonidS  am I blind or have I dreamed?

                • I really do hope it's soon, control of notification is huge

                  • LeonidS  ? please or is this option?

                    • Hello everybody.

Baloo, yes, members become to follow each other just after friendship was established.
But unfortunately there is no the option (setting) to disable this behaviour.

                      ---
                      Best Regards
                      Anton

                      • It does not seem like when I become friends with someone I automatically follow them. I have seen it work in most cases, but not in all cases.

                        • I had the same problem when I started with UNA. Then they added the option.... "Group Settings"  This option is very helpful.  I found it very useful to start with checking the box for "Group settings" on the first page. Other wise you need to go throu 100's of options. after that it's very easy to pick what you want from there.
