OneSignal

Hello UNA, do we still need to create an account on OneSignal to receive notifications for the messenger?

    • Hello Will Monte ,

If you already have OneSignal account for UNA site,  you don't need to create separated account for messenger, just enable option - "Enable OneSignal Push Notifications (If global site's push notification options are set, they will be used for messenger) " in Studio -> Messenger -> Settings

      • I was looking into this OneSignal to possibly enable push notifications but have a question. At their website, they have options to get started now with 'Mobile Push' and 'Web Push'. Do you have to setup 2 there or do you have the option to include both Mobile and Web in the same account?

        • Alexey this is the issue i have been trying to bring up before and never received a solid answer from UNA. OneSignal saves the messages in their database. None of us want our users messages saved on any 3rd parties website, it's a HUGE issue. Look at what is happening with FB and other social media platforms, i had an account with OneSignal and when i saw that they save my chats with other members i immediately deleted my account over at OneSignal. As a matter a fact if UNA uses them, i am going to try to distant myself from using the Jot messenger here as much as i can, cause that means that my messages with your team and others are being stored over at OneSignal. As long as UNA uses OneSignal i can not promote my site and ask people to join. I won't lie to my friends nor will i lie to any potential client/company that wants to leave FaceCrook and those other rip offs. Please don't take this personal, but this is one of those issues that scare users away and prevent others from joining. This is a HUGE PROBLEM THAT NEEDS ATTENTION IMMEDIATELY PLEASE.

          • Hey Will, I may be wrong here but, Considering I have the messenger installed at my site and working without a OneSignal account, how could OneSignal be storing my website's messages?

From my understanding, Jot Messenger uses Jot Server and not OneSignal to provide messenger services. OneSignal would just be used for the 'notification push' to your browser and/or mobile device. Although they may store the notification push, I would not think that they are storing 'complete' conversations from the messenger or any other content on your site.

That would be considered a 'back door' hack to steal website data. I don't think that is what's happening here. Can you provide where you found that OneSignal stores all of your conversations used by Jot Messenger so I can see for my self?

            • Chris here it is https://documentation.onesignal.com/docs/data-collected-by-the-onesignal-sdk

              https://documentation.onesignal.com/docs/handling-personal-data

I discovered this a while back when i had an account with them, as i navigated their site i came across a section in which i saw my messages stored. I immediately removed my account and brought it up UNA's attention. :/

                • Alexey, that's the problem, I refuse to use OneSignal, they store data from my users chat on their website. When will u guys use a more secure alternative?

                  • Hello!

You may use Jot Messenger without OneSignal, it is not mandatory option to make it work. We will add email notification to Jot Messenger in the next version, it will help to notify your members about new messages faster.

About OneSignal: We are working on alternatives and try to find something in the nearest time.

About Web Push and Mobile Push:  We are using only Web Push, because we have only web version and have no mobile apps.

                    • Hello Alexey, can you say more or less when will the new version of messenger integrate the notifications mail?

                      • Hello Nathe Forden,

                        Ok, we will check it.

                        • Hello Baloo

It will be released during this month.

If you have any suggestions or desires how to implement this ability, let me know :)

                          • Well since you propose it... :-)  I would say a little sign next to the message that means if it was read. I do not know if this is not too resource consuming ...?

                            • ... Also need some settings in the permissions, who can use messenger and who can use public channels.

                              • Yes, connecting with permissions - is also in abilities list. We have several ways how to do this.

Yes, this is another story for another post :)

                                • Uh ... also Alexey mentions, very useful on public channels.

                                  • Please try to make Jot messenger as private as can be. That's the one big issue that comes up with potential clients.

                                    • Hello,

                                      Baloo  ok about mentions.

Will Monte  what do you mean under private messages? At present, all messages are stored in database as Blob and only owner or participant of the talk can read them. Do you need to encrypt them in database too?

                                      • OneSignal stores our chat messages on their website. I deleted my account with them because they keep my messages.

                                        • Hello!

Will Monte  you don't need to worry about messages in OneSignal if you disable OneSignal in UNA or in messenger, in this case messages are stored only on your server's database.

Nathe Forden this ability is in our features list for messenger.

                                          • Alexey correct, but if i disable OneSignal which i did, i won;t receive notifications which i don't and never did.

                                            • Will Monte, yes but we have no alternatives at present for push notifications, we will continue to work on it.

As I mentioned above, we will add email notification to the nearest version.

                                              • Also note that there is not only the problem of confidentiality. There are still many people who reflexively refuse push notifications when they arrive and do not know the site yet. Let's not forget either, that the sites that ask this question are more and more numerous to a point where it will become annoying, which in my opinion will lead to more and more refusals. So, notifcation mail becomes urgent.

                                                • Hello Baloo ,

Yes, we also think how this part can be improved and don't send the same notification many times especially to different devices in case if member already got it.

                                                  • i understand the concern Will Monte we all have our reasons but i will just bake it into my terms of service/privacy policy i already pretty much have already with the cookies
