Multilingual & Multiregional

When running an international community, we often face the SEO and domain structure question with site/content in different languages and different region. The purpose is to be as well present on the French pages than on the Chinese ones for instance.

what is the dynamic with those option and the UNA code. Is the UNA only one language default or google will index all of its languages ? 

I am trying to achieve a global presence of one same website with different sub domains or sub folders accordign to the region but sharing same code and database...

PS : the DB and content is the same for all subdomains, it will be msotl autogenerated by users and some wil be wrtten for each respective regions.
