relationships are also friends?

So a relationship is also a friend? For example, if a person chooses the privacy field "friends" then all "relationships" with that person will also see the post? This is unless the person chooses "selected friends..." or "selected relationships..." correct? I am asking this to clarify how the "visible to (profile)" and "who can contact me" options work.
