Una servers are with who?

just signed up with gab and while i was waiting for the sign up process to finish i noticed that the progress url at left bottom  had amazon.aws. i wonder how long gab is going to last?  My question is una platform cloud servers immune to this sort of shutdown as well? Are they somehow not going to be shut down by big tech?

    • UNA Cloud is powered by Linode. We also use dedicated servers from HEG, some amazon services and GCP for various projects and testing.

Note that UNA Cloud is not a single multi-tenanted environment. Each site is using a separate instance, all completely independent of each other and using datacenters in different locations worldwide. Should Linode be forced to stop services to any of our servers, we would be able to provide an opportunity for a client to relocate their site to a dedicated server anywhere in the world, or even self-host if needed.

We strongly believe in freedom of speech and the need for wide distribution of social media influence as opposed to concentration of all power by a handful of networks that can be easily manipulated or compromised. At the same time we do not take any partisan position on any political subject. We provide open-source software, which anyone can use as they will, and we reserve the right to not provide support services to clients that are found violating our terms of use. If we find ourselves being unable to provide hosting services due to objection from Linode or other upstream providers, we would review the case and if the client's site is not in breach of our Terms, we would try to provide an alternative service or assist in migrating the site to independent hosting

      • Just wondering. While I was signing up with gab, in order to dump big tech social media, as a way to get the word out on our site I noticed that the urls in the box at bottom left of browser included amazon.aws. I hope gab  is not using that service like parler was or they will be next.

        • AWS may be used for all sorts of things - storage, webservers, DB servers, backups, messaging, transcoding, CDN, etc. They mayor may not be using Amazon for essential services, but I am sure that with some effort they can reconfigure their setup to not use Amazon if necessary.

Regardless of how it pans out, I believe that putting all eggs in one basket is not a good idea anyway. If GAB or Parler or some other site becomes prominent enough they will also become an easy target to take down. Social graph must rely on multiple networks and trestles peer-to-peer federation.

          • It is a lot easier to take down a site of 1,000,000 than 1,000 sites of 1000.

            • That's exactly right. Also a lot more likely to abuse the power. Same reason why supermarkets are bad if they force small businesses out. We all end up eating same strawberries, even if they are toxic. And not because they're the best strawberries, but because those are the ones that make most profit for the supermarket.

              • There is an excellent referral to TDM on the UNA page regarding hosting recommendations. I had a long conversation with them on this topic and they assured me they have zero issue with political sites as my current build out is political and in response to the treatment Parler has received. While cloud is a good solution one should always take steps to ensure a relatable and suitable plan B exists for them.

                • This is why I've chosen to go with a non-corporate location initially for my site and will eventually move it to my own machines.  I know, pricey but in the end to silence a man is to enslave him and the best solution here is to avoid that enslavement opportunity from the start.

                  • I think the issue Mantze is having is he wasn't just hosted on AWS, rather Parler was built on AWS proprietary software, so when they shut him down they kept the script, all he could get was his DB at best out of them.  Which is why it wasn't a simple move the site.

At this stage I'd be surprised if Boonex wasn't reaching to Mantze to help offer him an overall solution to his problem.
