    • Everything is encrypted in transit, under ssl. P2P encryption however required device to device connection and usually only used for one to one messaging or very small groups (ie using Signal protocol that creates multiple entry to end connections to enable encryption) and is not technically possible for a web-app. Device must be signed using native app. True p2p encryption is what you see on something like Signal or Telegram apps but not on FB messenger for that very reason.

We choose to focus on integrated community experience where chat is a part of web experience, so at this stage end to end encryption is not feasible. We have to choose our battles and our approach is to enable more niche communities to appear and let people network around specific interests or affiliations. When it comes to software for sensitive communication that must be end to end encrypted, this problem is largely addressed by Signal, Telegram, et al (not so much WhtsApp due to questionable meta data privacy tactics) so we can focus on community networking.

        • Andrew, many thanks for the explanations.

Some of my projects only need the social network part and would rather rely on already popular messaging solutions, preferably those that are also known for respecting privacy, such as Signal.

Would it be easy to create a connection between Signal and UNA to override UNAs messaging system ? I mean, people would link/declare their Signal account (probably by just adding their associated phone number) to their UNA profile and every time a user wants to chat with his friend from the UNA-based web site/app, they would be sent to a conversation on Signal with the selected recipient(s).

          • I find this to be a good idea.  However I also worry that eventually big tech will bring telegram & signal into their sites as they've done w/Parler.  We need to have multiple solutions to this issue that can be quickly utilized for our members with minimum disruption to them.

Perhaps the answer lies in that Twitter Post about a decentralized platform.  Only we evolve in a centralized decentralized platform.  Bring everything to UNA and then when a post is made to UNA is broadcasts back out across all the platforms the members have brought in.  For example, a member uses our messenger, but it also posts into Signal, Telegram & FB messengers for them when both/all users have enabled those options.
