Best Tip ever : Backup, Backup, Backup

Hello everyone,

I just wanted to share the best tip I've ever heard : do your backup seriously ! It saved me from really big trouble a few days ago.

You may not have heard, but on march 10th 2021 in France, an important datacenter burned down. 3.6 million websites just stopped working, small and big ones. Short story long, many servers just disappeared in the fire, and the remaining ones will restart around march 22nd, once the power stations and hubs will be rebuild. In some cases the customers have lost their server AND the backups located in the same datacenter ! For other customers, impossible to access the backups due to the electrical shutdown (electricity was stopped for safety reasons, and to allow the 120 firefighters to work safely).

What saved me from loosing all my data, and being able to restart in a few hours after I discovered the problem ? External backups on a computer located in my home (= on a computer not located in the same datacenter/city). It may be something obvious, but are you sure the backups you make are really safe ? Will they be accessible in case of problem ?

The "3 2 1" golden rule : The 3-2-1 backup strategy simply states that you should have 3 copies of your data (your production data and 2 backup copies) on two different media (disk and tape) with one copy off-site for disaster recovery.

I could not believe this could happen when I started my backup policy 7 years ago.
