Password Reset - What is Password Encryption Scheme?

We are self hosting.  New install is not able to send email so I cannot use password reset by email.  I can reset password in phpMyAdmin if I know the encryption used.  Does anybody know the answer?  I tried Encrypt, Database, MD5 and a few others without success.
