Back in the day to today

Starting at Dolphin 6

I remember back in the day wanting to start a social community website for programming and developer users who have subscribed to me on YouTube.
I remember thinking how great Dolphin 6 was until it came time to buy and install mods.
That was a nightmare and a half cry lol but to get the feature i wanted, was something i had to painfully do.

It helped me to write mods, sell them and use those sales to invest in bigger mods for my site.
How were these mods sold? who remembers Expertzzz haha yup, right there.

With some patches and newer 6.x.x releases, it pretty much stayed the same until 7 was released.
The whole system got a makeover, module installations were much easier, the layout got a much needed makeover etc.
It was time for me to go microwave a couple bags of popcorn and cover my mouse and keyboard with popcorn butter and stay up all hours of the night playing with the system.

Dolphin has come a long ways and have received it's share of negative feedback, but hey...that's how we learn, right?
With what Boonex is working on now, i see that they're taking this much more serious and more business minded than ever and i hope to see that increase over the next few years.

Oh yeah, if i could only tag users in forum posts tongue-out this would be for you Andrew hahaha
When clicking on the "New Message" for messenger, can you have it so that chat is selected with enabling the ability to reply instead of clicking on the chat than chatting?
I was a little confused on that part at first.

    • Thank you, Jason! Hey, looks like it's time for an even bigger bag of popcorn, huh!

User-tags, or "mentions" that trigger notifications to the tagged members is now added to the GitHub repo - https://github.com/unaio/una/issues/670 . They're a little more tricky than, say, in-line hashtags, because they may be abused by spammers, and also require deeper integration with the text-editor. We are looking to change the text editor in the future to this - https://github.com/unaio/una/issues/479

Sorry, I didn't quite get this one. :) Could you elaborate?

      • That's awesome and yeah, i can see the spammy issues taking place.
Maybe there's a way of doing a check while a user is typing and if they mention a username that their friends with to go a head and apply the mention, otherwise display it as plain text.

I know the Boonex team is busy, but It would be cool to see the team develop a WYSIWYG editor custom to the platform.

As for the New Message thing.
If you get a notification of a new message and you click on it from the menu, it takes you to the chat, but you need to click on the user who sent the message before you can reply.
Whatever chat you end up on when you click the "New Message" notification, maybe have the text field display.

I was going to do a short screen record of it, but can't upload videos on here lol.

        • Yes, it's possible to create various limitations, approvals, etc... just making a point that @mentions is a seemingly trivial issue, but it carries a whole bunch of considerations and extra settings. We'll get to it anyway. :) It's needed.

We really don't want to make our own WYSIWYG editor :) ... we did it back when we built early versions of Orca forum, but it was a mess. We plan on using Froala editor in the future, but generally, UNA can work with different editors.

I now understand you about the messenger notification link issue. Thanks!

          • As for video... it's a matter of allowing embeds in the editor. In Discussions, we don't allow it by default, but it's easy enough to turn it on. Alternatively, your can simply upload the video to an Album and paste a link here, like so: https://una.io/page/view-album-media?id=18

            • That's understandable.
Sometimes newer is better, even though the concept with Orca back in the day was nice, looking back at it today tells a different story.
Gotta start somewhere and in most cases it's not the best however improves over time which is why you are where you are today with implementing new technology into the product.

              • Yeah...i seen it as added in the editor of the video.
Thanks for clearing that up (y)
