Any progress on "Vanity" Profile URL?

I know there are other "older" discussions on this, but they have seem to go off topic... 

Has there been any progress on implementing custom profile URL's ?

I have members asking about this, and don't really have an intelligent answer/explanation to give them, other than telling them "no"...not fun.
