new user signups

i have a lot of people try to sign up and for some reason, they get the account name email and password down, i watch as they're logged in, and then they cannot for some reason actually finish their profile.
i'm not sure why, either.  most of them get stuck at 44%.  then never come back.

I'm not interested in hosting a graveyard, so i made all the fields mandatory, and I think this confuses people. Before, I would get people signing up and never uploading a photo or changing their cover.  About 1.5 of every 10 would change the cover or profile.  But the ones that didn't, never came back, minus 3 out of 150, that did come back and put their picture and cover that was the case.

    • well hm.   yeah the user flow is a bit weird.. as a test user i fill out the form, get an email, (and pretend that i didnt get the email), as this would be normal, then im asked to fill out my profile.
at this point most people have already had a dozen notifications go off, and have probablly forgotten what they were even doing..
then they get an email finally and the token has either expired or they click it successfully, and then see the "fill out profile" and another dozen facebook notifications go off, and they're lost again....
most likely never to come back.
there must be a creative solution to this without being overly intrusive or just copying the strategy of make noises to gather attention. i wish people were better at focusing, but they've been trained not to be, so i understand the why, i just yet cannot see the solution,
(which always comes from variables not present in the problem itself...)
that aside, it makes it even more perplexing once they do fill out their profile, because the next time they come back to the site to log in, the login form appears to do nothing - no errors, nothing. the entire page just SITS there. it does not automatically refresh, (and i know there must be an easy way to fix this....) there has to be.. kinda like perhaps how you can tell a page to refresh after it gets data, much like using a favicon v=? in a url as way to refresh dynamic and mostly static/mixed content without having to call an entirely new page.. but i have never set that up on any website i've built, and am more open to an easy solution if there is one already existing....

      • as far as content goes, i've written about 150 posts of substance so far, and have around 200 or so photos on the site, and tons of videos to watch i've sourced from youtube and copied to my own domain videobottle. com for faster loading and seamless media card experience...
so once they're in theres plenty to do, if only the door wasn't so difficult to open....

        • Yes agreed. It seems the attention span is a very limited window these days. If it's not easy to join or content isn't there? Folks are gone, they don't stick around. My site is site is set to not be seen unless you join. I argue the content thing here all the time. It's finally starting to take notice. I in fact spent a few days last week looking at other platforms and what they offer to members? Not to switch to there software but to just see content differences. (18 other software companies). Dude. It blows my mind to how far behind we are in content being provided to members. AND THERE HUGELY ACTIVE! What I noticed in my research is a lot of what they offer as platforms is the same stuff we had on Dolphin. All that has to be done is connect the areas that provide interest here.

          • HAHA and thanks for your awesome coffee update. I am totally anticipating it.

            • As far as the login goes on my site. After filling out, it takes you in to site. refreshes and all that. YA i did find that a bit odd on your site. Cause you have to click on another menu link to move off of login. I wonder if your redirect is not set in your settings.

              • I will say on a admin side? UNA hands down is by far easier to use and administer then Dolphin ever was. So Boonex definitely has the Admin side of it down for sure.

                • ive tried to make my page layouts for each module interconnect in a sort of flow, with say you pull a video, then you have featured videos and popular videos and top videos..  on the same page boxed around the video you're watching.
and on the homepage, if your're using *gasp* a computer, and you can see the multi column layout, as the timeline goes all the major dots are there, things like active discussions, joined events, top photos, popular videos, etc.. each page layout is a rabbit hole designed to take you eventually back to the home button wondering whats going to come next..
i think it will be successful once the login stuff is resolved, and more people use the site and populate it with their thoughts feelings emotions and goodies.
most of the people on my site come for me, and then dont branch out and contact other site users, so i've been explaining to them they need to drag their friends over too, it will be more fun. i have one friend in germany in bavaria who talks with me daily on my site and she keeps telling people about it, but more of this needs to happen..
i like what you meant about tying content together.
as far as most sites, they dont let you see **** before you make an account, facebook doesn't, mewe doesn't, etc etc...
and ironically, none of the stuff we're doing is really new or revolutionary anyway, the key to a good user experience is a good logical and SIMPLE flow of expectations in tandem with the results one gets from clicking on things.. if things are not exactly as they expect, focus is gone and they assume it's broken,
or even worse, someone is hacking their phone. look at how personified and anthropomorphised the "reach" of the zuckerpuppet has become, even though 99.98% of the actions taken against site users being jailed are because they're saying stupid slanderous or libel type stuff, and then expecting to be lauded for it.. no, facebook isn't stupid, they jail these people or suspend their accounts because they are a legal liability to house on the platform, because they don't know how to behave and have terrible limits with their personal and emotional and social hygiene...
it's really ugly but this is what the mewe guy, mark weinstein had put together in 2001.

                  • you probably just answered Will Roberts 's main question from a few weeks ago, of "why." I'd never used dolphin so i have no idea how it was written and the code architecture looked, but this sites codebase and software is very very well laid out structurally, and highly logical.
and hence, the administration follows in suit.
this would be the biggest reason for a total revision and re-branding of a project, as well as unifying with perhaps a new developer or two.

                    • please find me your htaccess file so i can analyze it?   i am using the default one that una shipped with, but its done this since day one and its honestly MADDENING.  i am very patient but i have yet to figure out what the cause of this is...
also while we're here, when you make a post, the post form no longer rolls up when you hit submit, and theres like one or two other things driving me nuts, but those can wait, the login form thing is a high priority.
                       :)

the two bags in the front there are all you brother.  :)

                        • My world sits on that table, lol 😆

                          • Ya I'll see about getting that shortly for you.

                            • Dolphin was pretty as well, until you started getting different modules from different module writers. then in most cases they all worked together fine, but once in a while, lol.

                              • Yes reading this is exactly what I have been struggling with. I have about 10 friends on my site, but the others are friends of friends kinda thing. But it seems most stop at first level friends, lol. And yes people like to see things before they join. So having a site that is closed off to pubic can be a task to get people to join. It's like putting your hand in to the black box. You really don't know whats inside, but you take the step forward in hopes it is good. <<< it's this step that is painful for some, lol.

                                  • Let me know if that readable?

                                    • its what happens when you run windows.  but!  i was able to decode it in my brain.

it turns out i actually had removed somehow the login form....  from the homepage layout ;-P !  HA.  my fault as usual.

                                      :)

my login works normally now, and i finally got to bury that big block of text.

lets keep this discussion going though, this is a good one and i think a lot of good points are being brought up here.

                                      • huzzzaah !  thank you ! :D

                                        • i did a 10 minute walkthrough video .  i think i'm just going to put that on the main page for the unauthenticated so they can watch it, get excited and all fluffed up , then join.

                                          • 😀 Glad you got bro. I thought it was a bit odd it did that. Was thinking it has to be something simple 😀

                                            • what is ur website url, would like to see

                                              • mytribes.net

right now i'm adding an intro video block to the main page for unauthenticated users, and the video has 73 minutes left to upload.  but it's only 335 megs and the server is fast as hell.

so nevermind that the intro text says there's a video that isn't there quite yet.  :)

entire site is private, and you need to fill out ALL the fields for profile marked with a red asterisk before it will let you navigate around...

come on over though ! :-) all are welcome.

                                                • your lookin at the man who when he used to build servers and towers and stuff, would slave away for HOURS and then forget to plug the damn thing in, wondered why it didnt work, and go to sleep nearly crying all huddled up or flat like i'd gotten hit by a car, then wake up and laugh my ass off noticing it was not plugged in...

yet, can understand astrophysics.  go figure right?

                                                  • HAha. Ya been there... I too built many servers and pc's, lol. One time I was building a server for a friend and forgot to put the graphics card in. For hours I became stupid as I tried to install the drivers. ( I had plugged the Monitor in to the VGA connection on the mobo). Then I looked over at the table, where the graphics card was still sitting, lmao...

Must say...My friends was a bit concerned lol.

                                                    • to add this, is what happens when you are distracted by chatter, while working, lmao.

                                                      • Build a Dolphin site? LMAO 😀

                                                        • KISS; something that Boonex doesn't understand.  You want a simple sign-up form; as little as possible, don't make them write a book.  Once they sign-up (and perhaps verify) that should be it.  No other hoops to jump through (perhaps membership levels) in order to start adding content.  No create a profile, no create an organisation, just join and ready to start using the site.

                                                          • I have actually thought that through, lol. I just may. Run one along side my current site.

                                                            • In this time and age people are kind of careful about what type of info they leave on a new site. Especially one that isn't mainstream. To be realistic there shouldn't be a whole form to fill out unless it's a website for jobs, dating, or business related. Other than that a huge form of mandatory things to fill out can send a red flag to new users. My personal preference would be a quick easy sign up. Photo, user name, age, email, and wether you're a male, female, or organization/business....the more info you demand from people well they may not want to fill out personal info. Facebook makes everything public and people want alternatives. A "safe" space sometimes to just be...talk to strangers, fill in time. I would rather have a graveyard with potential users signing back on later than to have ones frustrated and give up AND give bad reviews to friends word of mouth. I can say for a fact that people will return when new or interesting content shows up. After a lot of apps created live broadcasting many people went back onto their old profiles or requested passwords to get back on. That's why I'm not really interested in numbers anymore. More focused on content and appearance. "If you build it they will come" -Field of Dreams. My Dolphin site had over 35,000 members with no advertising at all! Why? I focused on content. Made goals to add new mods every month. Now I sit here waiting patiently for UNA to have the same.

                                                              • Hey Will Roberts, that's all I require as well. If they are serious, they will fill out the "other" information later.

"Photo, user name, age, email, and whether you're a male, female"

                                                                • As a New user "stumbling" upon your site...make believe...I would offer a few suggestions. My Tribe is a great title....but it's missing on the login page. I would also take the explaining of your site and what it does and move it to a "What is My Tribe" pull down menu. Your logo isn't centered and it's very small. Also the scroll up button is on the left hand side. Most sites it's on the right hand side. Just some feedback but at the end of the day it's your site so I really wouldn't worry about it. When we create websites for others sometimes we have to find that fine line between our creation and making something for other people to enjoy.

                                                                  • Set your site where a profile is automatically created at signup.

                                                                    • its coming soon so your wife doesnt get upset, it'll show up when she forgot you ordered her super primo coffee and she will tear open the bag and squeal with joy and then you will both be drinking it and either get a lot of stuff done or just kinda sit around.  :)

                                                                      • this is more of a human behavior and risk taking thing and acclimitaztion/behavioral repetition thing...  :)  ive been studying psychology to figure out ways to hack at the fabric that pins this situation together.. :)  but in an honest way.

                                                                        • once upon a time in 2003 i was building a server and plugged one of the molex terminals from the power supply into the extension array of other molex plugs (also in the power supply)  this is before i learned the importance of cable routing...
well,  i plugged her in and within seconds the entire case was fuming white grey acrid electrical smoke from the wrappers burning off all the cables..  yeah that could have caused an explosion if the caps in the psu had taken much more of that...

                                                                          • shut the front door, James.  🤣🤣🤣

                                                                            • actually will while that works in theory, when people get to create an account without any "having to work for it" or take a personal investment "adding ones likeness or words" to a profile, like putting a flag in the moon upon landing, theres no reason to come back, and your site is only as strong as your memory of having gone there.  and most people cannot focus for shit.
                                                                              :)
when you stick your photo there, the natural human curiosity is to check on it later and see if anyone interacted with the thought form you projected into the site, or your first post, etc.. and if your in a good mood maybe you will write post 2, upload a photo, etc. :)
hav ya seen the simple join form plugin module?  and really, if a three field join form is too complicated, what does that say for the persons ability to be able to read a book or a line and follow instructions?  oh yeah, the me too generation doesnt read books,.. sorry im a bit salty right now, there is so much that needs to change in order for humanity to survive another 100 years or so without being subject to the fallacy and misery of their own doings  but i will stop :)

                                                                              • same here, although i made the location part mandatory too maybe thats whats bothering them.  ive had a few people just drop the pin in the ocean or something which i am fine with too :)

                                                                                • i added my site name to the main page good idea thank you
and "people will return when new or interesting content shows up?"
                                                                                  - how will they know? they never activated their profile by confirming it, and all that jazz. so there is no mechanism to notify them. and if they get dozens of emails about so and so posted a post in their email they will unsubscribe get pissed and forget the whole thing ever happened or worse call you a spammer.
people dont really give a &^^&&^^& about this stuff unless they are diehard into social internet, its not a priority at all for them. so they wont remember unless they are engaged.
the best way i know of so far is to get them interested from the get go, and to make an emotional commitment to coming back later. :) on their own.

                                                                                  • yes the logo is small because its not a feature. :)  its just a button.  even on my regular html sites, the logo isnt bigger than 72x72, because thats not why they came, the sites material is.
                                                                                    like here: trueform.org
                                                                                    or everywheres.org
                                                                                    see how small it is?
or what about my ebooks site, no logo even there:
                                                                                    bitdrop.org
while its okay that we have different design methodologies, i do appreciate what you are saying and that you took the time to write thoughtful responses, and I do thank you for it :) i just fail to understand the importance of the logo outside of branding. :)
i kept it small because most people insist on browsing on a phone...  and i do not want the logo to be a "dead tree trunk" getting in the way of their browsing experience every time they get close to the top of the page, and messing up the flow of the responsive html navigation elements......

                                                                                    • mine does this, but it doesnt fill out their photo/age/birthday/gender for them :)  what did you mean Tim? :)

                                                                                      • If you have many fields in the form, the discouragement can come from the fact that they do not find the submit button at the bottom, and therefore do not see the error due to the incomplete mandatory fields. It is for this reason that I had suggested to scroll automatically until the first error encountered. https://github.com/unaio/una/issues/2388

                                                                                        • if they dont know the submit button is at the bottom, how did they submit the form?  i dont understand. :)

these people have all used the internet before.

i dont think the problem is the form itself. or its length :)  its not that long to fill out.

                                                                                          • Maybe I misunderstood what you were saying at the outset.
In total I have 28 fields but only 10 are visible on the profile creation form. Then I offer 1000 points for a complete profile, in order to encourage members to complete all the fields. (100%)
When the member will then edit his profile, there are then 28 fields.
It completes, saves, but the form does not show in an obvious way that it misses compulsory fields to be completed because the message is at the bottom at the level of the submit button and therefore the member thinks that it is in order, in reality it is still on the form. (but above)
Then when he visits his profile he sees that the information has not been saved. It is in this sense that I said that it could be discouraging.
If instead of going back to the top of the form when saving, it focuses on the first error encountered or on the submit button, this should no longer happen. Do you understand what I mean?

                                                                                            • YES, now I do.  :-)
Thank you for explaining again. :-)
Your form is very complicated! Mine is quite simple. :-)
photo, birthday, gender, location i might be missing one thing but that is all ive asked :-)

                                                                                              • Asking someone's location could be the big issue like you said. I would definitely drop that.

                                                                                                • this is all the fields i am asking for only.  doesn't seem like much?

                                                                                                  image_transcoder.php?o=bx_froala_image&h=3653&dpx=2&t=1590292800
                                                                                                  • we will see i guess, i will give it another few days.  for some reason it feels like people trip out when they see a map but dont mind telling facebook the city they live in.
                                                                                                    this, in itself confuses me.

                                                                                                    • On Facebook you can give the city or town but using the location map to exactly pinpoint a location can make people uncomfortable. People go on other websites to try and get away from Facebook which is too personal for many people.

                                                                                                      • dude, haha i hear you, but consider this: if you dont want it exactly where you are just drop the damn pin in the ocean or in some random place.  problem solved done.  no further thought required.

i force the location because people all love looking at maps.  :)  and for obvious reasons like people later buying and selling services in their local area, and so on...
